The activity can be carried out as follows:
Aim: To carry out the activity and explain why the candle seems to be burning in the water.
Materials Required: Shoe box, burning candle, glass sheet (roughly 25 cm × 25 cm), glass of water.
Procedure:
(i) Take a shoe box and open one side. Place the burning candle inside it.
(ii) Place the roughly 25 cm × 25 cm glass sheet in front of this candle.
(iii) Now locate the image of the candle behind the glass sheet and place a glass of water at its position.
(iv) Keeping the candle hidden ask your friends to look at the image of the candle through the sheet of glass.
(v) Make a note of what you observe and provide an explanation.
Observations: Upon looking through the mirror it seems that the candle is burning in the glass of water.
Conclusions: Since the position of the image of the candle can be located behind the glass sheet, we can conclude that a plane transparent glass sheet forms an image behind itself.
