Solution to Activity 10.5 of NCERT Class 9 Science Chapter 10 Work and Energy

5. Complete Activity 10.5 (Page 116).

• A few sources of energy are listed above. There are many other sources of energy. List them.

• Discuss in small groups how certain sources of energy are due to the Sun.

• Are there sources of energy which are not due to the Sun?

Answer:

Some other sources of energy are listed below:

(i) Wind energy

(ii) Biomass energy

(iii) Geothermal energy

(iv) Hydroelectric energy

(v) Nuclear energy

(vi) Tidal energy

(vii) Wave energy

(viii) Chemical energy (from fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas)

(ix) Mechanical energy (from moving objects or systems)

(x) Electrical energy (generated from various sources)

Solar energy is derived from the sun. Solar panels or photovoltaic cells capture sunlight and convert it directly to electricity through photovoltaic effect. Solar energy is a renewable energy source.

Wind energy is caused by the sun’s heating of the earth’s atmosphere. The uneven heating causes temperature differences and pressure gradients and causes wind flow. Wind turbines capture the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into usable form. Wind energy is a usable energy source.

Biomass energy is produced during photosynthesis which relies on the sun’s energy to take place. During photosynthesis, plants produce organic compounds like carbohydrates, which serve as stored energy. This is another clean, renewable energy source.

Hydroelectric energy is also generated due to the water cycle which is initiated when the sun evaporates from the surfaces of water bodies. When it rains, water flows downhill and powers water turbines in hydroelectric dams. This energy is then converted into usable form. This is also another clean, renewable energy source.

Yes, there are sources of energy which are due to the sun. Nuclear energy is derived from the nucleus of atoms. Geothermal energy is derived from the interior of the earth. Energy derived from fossil fuels is another source of energy which is not derived from the sun.

“• A few sources of energy are listed above. There are many other sources of energy. List them.

• Discuss in small groups how certain sources of energy are due to the Sun.

• Are there sources of energy which are not due to the Sun?” – Solved.
