Solution to Activity 5.4 of NCERT Class 7 Science Chapter 5 Physical and Chemical Changes

4. Complete Activity 5.4 (Page 48). Boil some water in a container. Do you see the steam rising from the surface of water? Hold an inverted pan by its handle over the steam at some distance from the boiling water. Observe the inner surface of the pan. Do you see any droplet of water there?

Answer:

The above activity can be shown as follows:

Aim:
To hold the pan in the inverted position over the steam, observe the inner surface of the pan and make the necessary conclusions.

Materials Required:
Container,water, pan.

Procedure:

(i) Take the container with water and boil it.

(ii) Now hold the pan in an inverted position some distance above the boiling water. Observe what happens on the inner surface of the pan.

Observations:

Droplets of water will form on the inner surface of the pan.

Water droplets inside pan held over boiling water.
Droplets of Water: Water changes from liquid to vapour and then back to liquid on contact with the cooler pan. These are changes in the state of water and hence they are physical changes.

Conclusions:

Water changed from liquid to vapour and then back to liquid on contact with the cooler pan. These are changes in the state of water and hence they are physical changes.
