Solution to Activity 1.10 of NCERT Class 9 Science Chapter 1 Matter in Our Surroundings –

Answer:

Aim:
To observe what happens if the liquids are spilt on the floor, if the volume and shape of one liquid remains the same when poured into different containers and if the liquid flows easily and make the necessary conclusions.

Materials Required:
Water, cooking oil, milk, juice, a cold drink, three container of different shapes, measuring cylinder.

Procedure:

(i) Mark 50 mL on each of the different containers you have chosen with the help of a measuring cylinder from the laboratory.

(ii) Spill the liquids on the floor and observe what happens.

(iii) Measure 50 mL ofwater, transfer it into different containers one by one and observe if the volume and shape of the liquid remain the same.

(iv) Pour the water from one container into another and observe if it flows easily.

Observations:

  • When spilt on the floor, the liquids will spread out and form a thin layer on the floor.
  • When water is transferred into the different containers one by one, the volume stays the same (i.e. 50 mL) but the shape changes according to the container.
  • When poured from one container into another, water flows easily.

Conclusions:

  • Liquids have no fixed shape, but have a fixed volume. They take up the shape of the container in which they are kept.
  • Liquids flow and change shape, so they are not rigid. They can be called fluid.
