Solution to Activity 5.1 of NCERT Class 7 Science Chapter 5 Physical and Chemical Changes

1. Complete Activity 5.1 (Page 47). Cut a piece of paper in four square pieces. Cut each square piece further into four square pieces. Lay these pieces on the floor or a table so that the pieces acquire the shape of the original piece of paper (Fig. 5.1). Obviously, you cannot join the pieces back to make the original piece, but is there a change in the property of the paper?

Answer:

The above activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim:
To investigate if the paper pieces can be joined to form the original paper and make the necessary conclusions.

Materials Required:
Piece of paper.

Procedure:

(i) Cut a piece of paper in four equal square pieces.

(ii) Cut each smaller piece further into four equal square pieces.

(iii) Now lay these pieces such that the pieces acquire the shape of the original piece of paper as shown below:

Paper being cut into square pieces and arranged to resemble original sheet of paper.
Cutting of Paper: When paper is cut as show above, the cut pieces cannot be put back together to get the original paper. What property of the paper has changed here?

Observations:

The overall shape is the same, however the sizes of the paper pieces are different.

Conclusions:

This change is only a change in the size, which is a physical property of the paper. Thus, the change is a physical change.
