1. Find out about blood groups and their importance.
Answer:
Blood can be of different types or groups. Blood groups vary from person to person. There are mainly four blood groups under the ABO system: blood group A, blood group B, blood group AB and blood group O. Your specific blood group can be any of these four groups.
Not all blood groups are compatible with each other. Knowledge of blood groups is important because it determines what group(s) of blood are compatible with a person’s existing blood group, so we know what group(s) of blood to give them in case of an emergency.
The compatibilities of the different blood groups are listed below:
(i) Blood Group A: This group can only accept blood from a person with blood group A and blood group O.
(ii) Blood Group B: This group can only accept blood from a person with blood group B and blood group O.
(iii) Blood Group AB: This group can accept blood all groups – A, B, AB and O. For this reason, blood group AB is called universal acceptor.
(iv) Blood Group O: Although blood group O can donate blood to all other blood groups and is a universal donor, it can only accept blood from other individuals with blood group O.
If incompatible blood groups are mixed together it can be dangerous, so it is necessary to educate yourself about which groups your specific blood group is compatible with. Do at home: Find out what your specific blood group is by asking your parents or by undergoing a blood test if necessary. Then educate yourself about which blood groups your specific blood group is compatible with. Then make a note of what you found for future reference.
