Solution to Extended Learning – Activities and Projects Question 3 of NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 3 Coal and Petroleum

3. Find out the location of major thermal power plants in India. What could be the reasons for their being located at those places?

Answer:

The major thermal power plants in India are listed below:

Mundra Ultra Mega Power Plant (Gujarat): Located in the Kutch district.

Talcher Super Thermal Power Station (Odisha): Situated in Talcher, Odisha.

Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station and Singrauli Super Thermal Power Station (Madhya Pradesh): Located in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh.

Korba Super Thermal Power Plant (Chhattisgarh): Located in Korba, Chhattisgarh.

Amravati Thermal Power plant (Mumbai)

Chandrapur Thermal Power plant (Mumbai)

Ramagundam Super Thermal Power Station (Telangana)

Sipat Super Thermal Power Station (Chhattisgarh)

Mauda Super Thermal Power Station (Maharashtra)

Proximity to Coal Mines: Thermal power plants use coal as a fuel and so they are located near coal mines to reduce transportation costs and maintain a steady supply of fuel. They can also be located near coastal areas to maintain a steady supply of coal. For example, Talcher in Orissa and Korba in Chhattisgarh have vast coals reserves and hence thermal power plants are located there.

Proximity of Water: Thermal power plants need a lot of water for cooling, so they are often located near rivers or lakes to ensure an adequate water supply. For example, Sipat Super Thermal Power Station is situated near the Hasdeo River and Mauda Super Thermal Power Station is close to the Kanhan River. These serve as a water source for the power plant.

Transportation: Thermal power plants are located near railways and highways for efficient transportation of coal and other materials.

Load Centers: All the thermal power plants are located close to load centers for efficient distribution of electricity and to minimize transmission losses.

Availability of Land: The thermal power plants were built in places where land was readily available for building.

Government Policies: Government policies and regulations specially regarding land use and environmental considerations such as air quality influenced the location of the power plants.
