Solution to Activity 6.3 of NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 6 Reproduction in Animals

3. Complete Activity 6.3 (Page 73). Get permanent slides of hydra. Observe them using hand lens or a microscope. Look out for any bulges from the parent body. Count the number of bulges that you see in different slides. Also, note the size of the bulges. Draw the diagram of hydra, as you see it. Compare it with the Fig. 6.11.

Answer: The above activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim: To examine bulges from hydra in each slide, draw the diagram of hydra and compare it with Fig. 6.11.

Materials Required: Threepermanent slides of hydra, microscope, pencil, paper.

Procedure:

(i) Observe the permanent slides, each containing one hydra under a microscope.

(ii) Count the number of bulges that you see in the hydra in different slides and note the size of the bulges.

(iii) Draw the diagram of hydra and compare it with the Fig. 6.11.

Observations:

The following observations for the hydra in the three slides were noted:

SlidesNumber of bulgesSize of bulges
Slide 13All medium sized
Slide 221 medium sized, 1 small
Slide 31Small

The hydra in Slide 1 is shown below:

Picture of hydra budding under microscope.
Hydra Under Microscope: The hydra above has three bulges from the parent body.

The sketch of the hydra in Slide 3 is shown below. It is similar to the drawing in Figure 6.11.

Drawing of hydra.
Drawing of Hydra: Drawing of one of the hydra is shown above.

Conclusions: Hydra reproduces via bulges in its body called buds. This type of reproduction is called asexual reproduction.
