Solution to Extended Learning – Activities and Projects Question 3 of NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 5 Conservation of Plants and Animals

3. Is it justified to prevent tribals from staying in the core area of the forest? Discuss the matter in your class and note down the points for and against the motion in your notebook.

Answer:

After discussion in class, the following points were recorded for and against the motion:

Points for preventing tribals from staying in the core area of the forest:

Conservation of Biodiversity: Biodiversity should be allowed to thrive on its own without human interference. Many endangered species are also present in the core area of the forest. If tribals set up dwellings in the core area of the forest, it will disturb the ecosystem and prevent nature from functioning normally. It might drive away endangered species to other habitats, resulting in their extinction.

Prevention of Forest Degradation: If tribals are allowed to live in core areas, their activities will cause deforestation. Deforestation would lead to soil erosion, flooding and loss of habitat for wildlife. This would in turn disturb the ecosystem as a whole, resulting in a chain reaction.

Reduced Human-Wildlife Conflict: Preventing tribals from living in the core areas would lead to less conflict between humans and animals. This would result in preservation of both human and animal life.

Points against preventing tribals from staying in the core area of the forest:

Preserving Tradition: Tribes who have been in the core area of the forest for centuries should be allowed to live in their natural setting. If tribals are displaced and forced to live elsewhere they would not be able to lead normal lives and centuries-old practices would get disrupted. Their culture and tradition would be lost forever.

Indigenous Knowledge: Tribals have a lot of knowledge about the forest, which would be lost forever if they are displaced. Their knowledge is often used in research and is considered very important by scholars and scientists.

Contribution Towards Conservation: Many tribal communities take care of the forest as their own. They plant rare plants, medicinal herbs etc for the sole purpose of conserving them. So, displacing them would destroy their contribution towards conserving the forest.

Humans Rights Violation: Evicting tribal communities from their homes is unethical and raises concerns related to human rights and social justice.
