Solution to Activity 10.11 of NCERT Class 9 Science Chapter 10 Work and Energy

11. Complete Activity 10.11 (Page 119).

• Lift an object through a certain height. The object can now do work. It begins to fall when released.

• This implies that it has acquired some energy. If raised to a greater height it can do more work and hence possesses more energy.

• From where did it get the energy? Think and discuss.

Answer:

Aim:
To lift a ball to a certain height and release it and conclude based on the observations.

Materials Required:
Ball.

Procedure:

(i) Lift the ball to a certain height and release it. Note the observations.

(ii)Lift the ball even higher and release it. Note the observations.

Observations:

  • When you release the ball, it falls towards the ground.
  • When you increase the height from which the ball is released, it strikes the ground with a higher velocity
Ball raised through a certain height and dropped.
Potential Energy: The ball falls when you release it. From where did it get its energy?

Conclusions:

  • When you raise the ball to a certain height, it possesses energy in the form of potential energy. When it falls, it gets converted into kinetic energy.
  • When you raise the ball even higher, the potential energy possessed by the ball is even higher. Thus, when it falls the kinetic energy before is strikes the ground is also higher because the potential energy gets converted into kinetic energy.
