Solution to Extended Learning – Activities and Projects Question 5 of NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 5 Conservation of Plants and Animals

5. Make a list of the new information you have gathered from this chapter. Which information did you find the most interesting and why?

Answer:

Here is the list of new information I have gathered from this chapter:

(i) Biodiversity refers to the variety of organisms that exist on the earth.

(ii) Biodiversity is threatened by the effects of deforestation and climate change. So, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and biosphere reserves have been created by the government for protection of plants and animals.

(iii) Endemic species are species of plants and animals that exist only in a particular area and deforestation endangers their existence.

(iv) Species which are on the verge of extinction are called endangered species. For example, tiger is an endangered species in India.

(v) Red Data Book is the source book which keeps a record of all endangered plants and animals.

(vi) Birds migrate to far-away places every year because extreme cold weather. They are known as migratory birds.

(vii) A lot of trees are being cut down to make paper. We should cut down on wastage of paper and use paper judiciously. This will help mitigate the harmful effects of deforestation.

(viii) Another answer to deforestation is reforestation. We should all work to plant new forests to protect the green wealth of our planet.

I found the information on reforestation the most interesting because it is the best counter-measure to deforestation. Whether done artificially or naturally, reforestation efforts work to restore the green wealth of our planet. We should all engage in and encourage reforestation efforts to preserve the world’s ecosystem for future generations.
