Solution to Activity 8.1 of NCERT Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Force and Laws of Motion

1. Complete Activity 8.1 (Page 90).

• Make a pile of similar carom coins on a table, as shown in Fig. 8.6.

• Attempt a sharp horizontal hit at the bottom of the pile using another carom coin or the striker. If the hit is strong enough, the bottom coin moves out quickly. Once the lowest coin is removed, the inertia of the other coins makes them ‘fall’ vertically on the table.

Answer:

Aim:
To strike the bottom of the pile of coins, observe what happens and make the necessary conclusions.

Materials Required:
Carom board, carom coins, striker.

Procedure:

(i) Place the striker at one end of the carom board and attempt a sharp horizontal hit at the bottom of the pile. Observe what happens.

Observations:

The bottom coin gets dislodged and moves out quickly and the rest of pile falls vertically on the table.

Hand about to hit the striker towards the pile.
Inertia of Rest: When you strike the pile, the bottom coin moves out quickly. Let us see why this happens.

Conclusions: When the bottom coin gets dislodged and moves away from the pile, the rest of the pile falls vertically because they tend to maintain their state of rest due to inertia.
