3. Complete Activity 3.3 (Page 26). Measure the body temperature of some of your friends (at least 10) with a clinical thermometer. Record your observations as in Table 3.2. Is the body temperature of every person 37°C?

Answer: The above activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim:
To record the body temperatures of 10 people and make the necessary conclusions based on the values obtained.

Materials Required:
Clinical thermometer, 10 friends.

Procedure:

(i) The clinical thermometer should be washed with antiseptic solution before putting it in each person’s mouth.

(ii) Before using it a few jerks should be given to bring the level of mercury down below 35°C.

(iii) Each person should place the thermometer underneath their tongue.

(iv) After leaving it under the tongue for one minute, the thermometer should be extracted and the temperature should be read keeping the level of mercury along the line of sight.

Observations:

The temperatures for 10 friends are recorded in Table 3.2:

Conclusions:

The body temperatures of a person can fluctuate based on age, time of day, activity level and individual health conditions. However, the normal body temperature of a healthy person is almost equal to 370 C.
