Chapter 1: The Wonderful World of Science

The first chapter is designed to ignite your curiosity about science as a subject. It teaches you to explore the world around you with a curious mind. It compares science to an unending jigsaw puzzle and lists some phenomena that happens in the natural world. You learn that scientific ideas are all interconnected. The most important part of the chapter is the ‘Scientific Method’ and shows us how to use to explore phenomena around us. Let us embark on this exciting journey of science together!

This chapter contains some interesting activities which will help you internalise the material.

Know the tests for detecting the presence of carbohydrates, proteins, fats well, you will see questions from these tests in your exams. Another important part is what various nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals do for our body. Study the chart on vitamins and minerals on Page 44 well, as you can expect questions from the chart in your exams.

Chapter 4: Exploring Magnets

Understand the concepts of magnetic and non-magnetic materials, poles of a magnet, finding directions using magnets and the magnetic compass. We have explained these concepts thoroughly in these materials, so study them well for your exams. Another important concept presented in this chapter is the attraction and repulsion between magnets and deflection of a magnetic compass due to a bar magnet. Study these parts well.

The important concepts of the chapter are understanding the different ways of measurement of length, how to measure length correctly, standard units of measurement and types of motion. In this chapter you will learn about the three states of water, namely ice, water and water vapour, and the interconversion between them. You will study the phenomena of melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation well. An important part of the chapter are the factors affecting the rate of evaporation, which you must understand well as you will definitely see questions from it in your exams. The chapter ends with a discussion on the formation of clouds and the water cycle.

This chapter teaches you basic astronomy. It includes the names and positions of several constellations and stars, which you will be expected to know by heart.
