Chapter 1 Patterns in Mathematics

Chapter 1 Patterns in Mathematics talks about basic number patterns such as number sequences.  This chapter talks about some important number sequences such as counting numbers, odd numbers, even numbers, square numbers, triangular numbers, cube numbers, Virahānka numbers, and powers of 2. The second part of the chapter are shape sequences such as regular polygons, complete graphs, stacked triangles and squares, and Koch snowflake iterations.

Chapter 1 Patterns in Mathematics

Chapter 2 Lines and Angles

This chapter introduces you to the basic of geometry. It defines a point, line segment, line, ray, vertex, angles and how to measure angles using a protractor. It also teaches you to classify angles as acute, right-angled, obtuse and reflex. The problems in the chapter will effectively teach you the concepts and how to use a protractor to measure and draw angles, so practise them well.

Chapter 2 Lines and Angles

Chapter 3 Number Play

The chapter starts by explaining the concept of supercells which is very important. This chapter will teach you to use number in ways you have not encountered before. You will encounter strange patterns and learn to recognize them.

Chapter 3 Number Play

Chapter 4 Data Handling and Presentation

This chapter starts by showing you how to collect and organise data in methodical ways. This is followed by detailed explanations on pictographs, bar graphs and how to draw them using an appropriate scale. The chapter also teaches you to read data from a given pictograph or bar graph.

Chapter 4 Data Handling and Presentation

Chapter 5 Prime Time

A number is a factor of another if it divides it exactly. Prime numbers have only two factors: 1 and the number itself, while composite numbers have more than two factors. Every number greater than 1 can be written as a product of prime numbers, called its prime factorisation, which is unique apart from the order of factors. Two numbers are co-prime if they have no common prime factors. One number is a factor of another if its prime factorisation is included in the other’s.

Chapter 5 Prime Time

Chapter 6 Perimeter and Area

You will learn the formulas for calculating perimeters of different geometrical shapes. Then you will learn about the formulas for calculating areas of different geometrical shapes. The problems in the chapter are designed to enhance your concepts and problem-solving skills, to practise them well.

Chapter 6 Perimeter and Area

Chapter 7 Fractions

This chapter introduces you to the concept of fractions. It explains the numerator and denominator of a fraction, mixed fractions, how fractions can be shown on a number line, equivalent fractions and Brahmagupta’s method for adding or subtracting fractions. This is a very important topic both for your exams and higher classes as well because it sets the conceptual foundation, so practise it well.

Chapter 7 Fractions

Chapter 8 Playing With Constructions

This chapter introduces you to the topic of constructions. You will learn how to construct different shapes using instruments such as a compass and a protractor. Practise and memorise the methods of construction well as you will definitely see them in your exams.

Chapter 9 Symmetry

The topic of symmetry introduces you to the two main concepts of lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry. Figures can have multiples lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry of more than 1. The key to mastering this chapter is to visualise and practise problems involving many different kinds of figures. Have fun!

Chapter 10 The Other Side of Zero

This chapter introduces you to the concept of negative integers. You will learn about operations involving negative integers such as Brahmagupta’s rules for addition and Brahmagupta’s rules for subtraction. You will also learn to compare positive and negative integers, which is very useful.
