Solution to Extended Learning – Activities and Projects Question 1 of NCERT Class 7 Science Chapter 6 Respiration in Organisms

1. Observe fish in an aquarium. You will find flap like structures on both sides of their heads. These are flaps which cover the gills. These flaps open and close alternately. On the basis of these observations, explain the process of respiration in the fish.

Answer:

The process of respiration in the fish is as follows:

Step 1: A fish takes in water which contains dissolved oxygen through the mouth.

Step 2: At the same time the gill flaps close to prevent water from escaping through the gill openings.

Step 3: The water that enters is passed over the gills which are rich in blood vessels.

Step 4: These blood vessels absorb the oxygen from water into the bloodstream.

Step 5: Lastly, the gills open again to release the water containing waste carbon dioxide to complete the respiration process.

Process of respiration in fish where water enters through the mouth and oxygen is absorbed by gills.
Respiration in Fish: Water enters through the mouth of the fish. The gills work to absorb the oxygen dissolved in water and expel the waste carbon dioxide.
