Phd – General Facts

Hello, prospective doctoral students! In this post I will share with you some general insights regarding doctoral education in India. While I always recommend pursuing a PhD abroad, if you’re dead set on a PhD in India, you are at the right place! There’s plenty more to follow!

  • Firstly, I want to start out by saying that only pursue a PhD if you enjoy research and you’re interested in a career in research/academia. Not everyone is cut out for research. Remember, you will never be happy doing something if you don’t enjoy it! Research in any field needs a lot of dedication. I would recommend going for a Masters degree first. While doing your Masters thesis, you will get a general idea of what research is like. Then you can decide if a PhD is right for you.
  • Another vital thing I want to point out is that once you’ve decided that you want to you do a PhD, choose your institution wisely. DO NOT go by rankings. A lower ranked institution might be doing much better research in your field and have more funding than a higher ranked one. I will list a lot of specific info regarding this later, so stay tuned.
  • I want to end by saying, choose your research advisor wisely. Do a lot of research by asking seniors and scouring through their websites, if they have one. Remember, your supervisor will guide you throughout your PhD studies and your graduation is in their hands. So, make sure you have a good rapport with your advisor!

I will provide a lot more info on this topic, so stay tuned!
