3. Complete Activity 4.3 (Page 42). Place a piece of burning wood or charcoal on an iron plate or Tawa. Cover it with a glass jar or a tumbler, or a transparent plastic jar. Observe what happens. Does charcoal stop burning after sometime? Can you think of the reason why it stops burning?
Answer:
The above activity can be carried out as follows:
Aim: To observe what happens to the burning charcoal after being covered with the glass jar after sometime and conclude based on that.
Materials Required: Charcoal, iron plate or tawa, glass tumbler.
Procedure:
(i) Place the piece of burning wood or charcoal on an iron plate or Tawa.
(ii) Cover the piece of charcoal with the glass tumbler and observe what happens.

Observations:
You will observe that the charcoal stops burning after some time when covered with the glass tumble
Conclusions: We conclude that the charcoal stops burning because all the air inside the tumbler is used up. Therefore, air is necessary to support combustion.
