Aim: To plant five different plants in your locality during this academic year and ensure their maintenance till they grow.
Materials Required: Saplings of money plant, apple tree, guava tree, bougainvillea tree, rose tree.
Procedure:
(i) Choose plants that are adapted specifically to your local conditions. For this activity we have chosen to plant saplings of money plant,apple tree, guava tree, bougainvillea tree, rose tree. The forest department sometimes provides free saplings of such plants.
(ii) Plant the seeds in appropriate places in your locality which receive adequate sunlight and proper soil drainage.
(iii) Arrange saplings of the five mentioned trees, soil, compost and a gardening spade.
(iv) If you are planting the trees outside your own garden, make sure you have permission from the local municipality.
(v) Now using your spade dig holes deep enough to accommodate all the roots and mix the soil with compost generated from kitchen waste.
(vi) Plant the saplings and fill the hole with soil.
(vi) Depending on the watering needs of each plant, follow a regular watering schedule.
(vii) Make sure that the plants do not get infested with pests, weeds and fungus. Use preventive measures like weeding and also suitable fungicides. Caution: Know in advance which fungicide is suitable for which tree.
(viii) Encourage the community to not tamper with the saplings and watch them grow into beautiful trees.
Observations:
We observe that:
- The money plant showed noticeable growth within a few weeks.
- The apple tree took 6 – 7 months to show noticeable growth.
- The guava tree achieved significant growth in 7 – 8 months.
- The bougainvillea tree showed significant growth within 3 – 4 months.
- The rose bloomed in 3 – 4 months.
Conclusions: We conclude that we should plants trees in our community to save the environment.
