Prepare a model to demonstrate movement of particles in solids, liquids and gases.
For making this model you will need
• A transparent jar
• A big rubber balloon or piece of stretchable rubber sheet
• A string
• Few chickpeas or black gram or dry green peas.
How to make?
• Put the seeds in the jar.
• Sew the string to the centre of the rubber sheet and put some tape to keep it tied securely.
• Stretch and tie the rubber sheet on the mouth of the jar.
• Your model is ready. Now run your fingers up and down the string by first tugging at it slowly and then rapidly.
Answer:
The above activity can be carried out as follows:
Aim: To construct a model to show movement of particles in solids, liquids and gases.
Materials Required: Transparent jar, rubber sheet, string, needle, dry green peas, tape.
Procedure:
(i) With the needle, sew the string to the centre of the rubber sheet and fasten the string securely to the rubber sheet with tape.
(ii) Now put some green pees in the jar.
(iii) Now securely fasten the rubber sheet to the mouth of the jar.
(iv) Now hold the jar upside down with one hand and run keep tugging at the string with your other hand in a to and fro motion, first slowly and then rapidly. Observe what happens.

Observations:
- When you tug slowly the peas churn inside the glass jar.
- When you tug rapidly the peas bounce up and down more vigorously.
Conclusions:
- The slow tugging of the string and subsequent churning of the peas represents kinetic energy being applied to solids. The kinetic energy is enough to break the forces of attraction between the solid particles, which then get converted to liquid state.
- The rapid tugging of the string and subsequent bouncing of peas represents kinetic energy being applied to liquids. The kinetic energy is enough to break the forces of attraction between the liquid particles, which then get converted to gaseous state.
- Thus, this model represents the conversion of solid to liquid and liquid to gas.
