12. Complete Activity 2.12 (Page 27).
- Put about 2 g soil in a test tube and add 5 mL water to it.
- Shake the contents of the test tube.
- Filter the contents and collect the filtrate in a test tube.
- Check the pH of this filtrate with the help of universal indicator paper.
- What can you conclude about the ideal soil pH for the growth of plants in your region?
Answer:
Aim: To check the pH of the filtrate and conclude regarding ideal soil pH for the growth of plants in your region.
Materials Required: 2 g soil, test tube, 5 mL water, universal indicator paper.
Procedure:
(i) Place the 2 g of soil in the test tube.
(ii) Add 5 mL of water to the test tube.
(iii) Set up a filtration apparatus using a funnel and filter paper.
(iv) Filter the contents through the filtration apparatus and collect the filtrate in a test tube.
(v) Check the pH of this filtrate using universal indicator paper.Report the observations.
Observations:
The pH of the filtrate was found to be around 6.

Conclusions: The ideal pH for the growth of plants in my region would be in the range of 5.5 – 7, neither too acidic nor too basic.
