Rama to the Rescue Long Answer Type Questions:

1. Describe what went through the thief’s mind when he entered the house? How was he taken by surprise?
Answer:

The thief had to work hard to dig a hole in the wall of the house to get in, but once inside he was unhappy to find that the couple were still awake and chatting. He realised that he would have to patiently wait for them to fall asleep. He listened intently to their chatter in case they revealed where they kept their money.
He grew impatient when the couple appeared to be playing a “silly game” which involved calling out to their son “Rama” in different situations. He did not know that the village kotwal was called “Rama”, so he could not understand that he was being duped. To his utter astonishment he was suddenly nabbed by the village kotwal.

2. How did the couple save themselves from being robbed? What was the plan they devised?
Answer:
The couple realised that someone with evil intentions had entered their house unseen by the village kotwal. They did not want to confront the thief, but devised a plan to alert the village kotwal. Their plan was ingenious and depended on the fact that the thief would not know that the kotwal was called “Ramu”. They pretended that they would name their unborn son “Ramu” and the man asked his wife how she would call their son in different scenarios – when he was in the house, or yard, or the street. The wife complied and called out softly at first, then louder and finally she raised her voice and shouted out “Ramu” as if she wanted her son who was in the street to hear her. The plan worked because Ramu, the village kotwal, heard her calling out and rushed to their rescue. Thus, the couple was saved from being robbed by their cleverness.
