Solution to Extended Learning – Activities and Projects Question 6 of NCERT Class 7 Science Chapter 11 Light

6. Role play. Here is a game that a group of children can play. One child will be chosen to act as the object and another will act as the image of the object. The object and the image will sit opposite to each other. The object will make movements, such as raising a hand, touching an ear etc. The image will have to make the correct movement following the movement of the object. The rest of the group will watch the movements of the image. If the image fails to make the correct movement, she/he will be retired. Another child will take her/his place and the game will continue. A scoring scheme can be introduced. The group that scores the maximum will be declared the winner.

Answer: The activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim: To practise learning about object and mirror image positions by playing the game.

Materials Required: Yourself and your friends and a scorecard.

Procedure:

(i) Divide into three groups of four children. Fix one child to be the ‘object’ in each group and the other three will each be the ‘image’.

(ii) The ‘object’ and the first ‘image’ will sit opposite to each other. The object should make movements, such as raising a hand, touching a ear etc and the first ‘image’ will have to make the correct movement following the movement of the object. The rest of the group will watch the movements of the image and award 1 point every time a correct movement is made. When the ‘image’ fails to make the correct movement he/she should be retired and the activity is repeated for the other two ‘images’ in the group. The total score is counted for each group.

(iii) All groups should participate in the activity and the group that scores the maximum points will be declared the winner.

Observations: A sample ‘object’ and ‘image’ position is shown below. The ‘object’ is standing in front of the desk and the ‘image’ is standing behind the desk. Imagine there is a mirror between them. It is easy to see that the ‘image’ has made the correct movements based on the movements of the ‘object’.

Object and Image: The boy standing in front is the object and the boy standing at the back is the mirror image. Convince yourself that they are correctly positioned.

The scores for all three groups are shown below. As you can see Group B is the winner with 16 points.

Scores for all 3 Groups

Conclusions: We conclude that by playing this game that the image formed by a plane mirror is laterally inverted while the rest of it remains the same.
