Solution to Activity 8.2 of NCERT Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Force and Laws of Motion

2. Complete Activity 8.2 (Page 91).

Set a five-rupee coin on a stiff card covering an empty glass tumbler standing on a table as shown in Fig. 8.7.

• Give the card a sharp horizontal flick with a finger. If we do it fast then the card shoots away, allowing the coin to fall vertically into the glass tumbler due to its inertia.

Answer:

Aim:
To give the card a sharp flick and observe what happens to the coin and conclude.

Materials Required:
Five-rupee coin, card, glass tumbler.

Procedure:

(i) Place the card over the mouth of the glass tumbler.

(ii) Place the five-rupee coin on the card.

(iii) Then give the card a sharp horizontal flick with your finger. Observe what happens and conclude based on that.

Observations:
The card shoots away and the coin falls vertically into the tumbler.

The stiff card covering an empty glass tumbler is given a sharp horizontal flick with a finger.
Inertia of Rest: When the card is flicked away the coin falls vertically into the class. Let us see why this happens.

Conclusions:

When the card fires away, the coin tends to maintain its state of rest due to inertia and falls vertically into the tumbler.

Set a five-rupee coin on a stiff card covering an empty glass tumbler standing on a table as shown in Fig. 8.7.

• Give the card a sharp horizontal flick with a finger. If we do it fast then the card shoots away, allowing the coin to fall vertically into the glass tumbler due to its inertia.” – Solved.
