3. Complete Activity 6.3 (Page 60). Figure 6.3 shows the various activities carried out by a person during a normal day. Can you say in which activity, the rate of breathing will be the slowest and in which it will be the fastest? Assign numbers to the pictures in the order of increasing rate of breathing according to your experience.

Answer: The above activities are numbered 1-6 in increasing order of their rate of breathing:

Activity 1: This activity involves sleeping which requires the least amount of energy of all the activities and so the breathing rate will be the slowest of all the activities.
Activity 2: This activity involves a person sitting and studying and so it requires more energy than when a person is sleeping but less energy than the other activities. So, the breathing rate will be more than Activity 1 but less than all the others.
Activity 3: This activity involves an elderly gentleman walking slowly and therefore will require more energy than sleeping (Activity 1) and sitting (Activity 2), but less than all the other activities.
Activity 4: This depicts a woman washing clothes and requires more energy than the previous three activities.
Activity 5: In this activity involves a man climbing a ladder and it is easy to see why it requires more energy than the previous four activities.
Activity 6: The last activity involves a girl exercising and so the energy requirement for this activity will be the highest of all. Hence this activity has the fastest breathing rate of all the activities. Therefore, we can see that Activity 1 which involves a person sleeping will have the slowest breathing rate and Activity 6 which involves a person exercising will have the fastest breathing rate.
