2. Choose any five families of your neighbourhood. Enquire whether their energy consumption (coal, gas, electricity, petrol, kerosene) has increased or decreased in the last five years. Enquire also about the measures they adopt to conserve energy.
Answer:
I spoke to five families in my neighbourhood in Delhi about their energy consumption and measures they adopt to conserve energy. Here are their responses:
Family A:
Energy Consumption: “Energy consumption in our household has increased slightly in the last five years because we have started using a few new electrical appliances such as geyser and microwave. We’ve also been relying more on gas for cooking.”
Conservation Measures: “We have started using energy-efficient LED bulbs to compensate for the increase in energy consumption. We also use electric induction stoves.”
Family B:
Energy Consumption: “During the past five years, our family has stopped using the traditional petrol-guzzling car and transitioned to using an energy efficient hybrid car. We have done this intentionally to help conserve petrol.”
Conservation Measures: “To conserve energy, we turn off lights, fans and AC in our house when not in use. Also, during the winter, we have stopped using a room heater and use extra quilts instead. We have encouraged our community to do the same. Our community is also investing in renewable energy sources such as solar panels”
Family C:
Energy Consumption: “Our family is young and growing and so our energy requirements have gone up in the last five years. We have two toddlers at home, so we must be careful that the temperature in the house is not too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. We use electric blankets and warm water for the toddlers, which has contributed to increased energy consumption.”
Conservation Measures: “To offset our growing energy consumption, my husband and I bike to work every day. Luckily, our workplace is nearby, which makes biking possible.”
Family D:
Energy Consumption: “Our energy consumption has remained almost stable for the last 5 years. This is because we have been very conscious of the growing carbon footprint in our environment and have been judicious about our energy usage. We are proud to say we have done our bit to save the environment.”
Conservation Measures: “We have transitioned to having over 50 % of our energy sourced from renewable sources such as solar energy. We are also planning to use an electric car in the future.”
Family E:
Energy Consumption: “Our energy consumption has increased in the past five years due to excessive kerosene heating in the winter months.”
Conservation Measures: “To save energy in the winter we are looking to insulate the windows and get an electric heater to reduce the need for kerosene heating.”
“Choose any five families of your neighbourhood. Enquire whether their energy consumption (coal, gas, electricity, petrol, kerosene) has increased or decreased in the last five years. Enquire also about the measures they adopt to conserve energy.” – Solved.
