Aim: To observe if the level of water changes when salt is dissolved in water and make the necessary conclusions.

Materials Required:
100 mL beaker, water, salt, glass rod.

Procedure:

(i) Fill the 100 mL beaker with water and mark the level of water on the beaker.

(ii) Take a teaspoonful of salt and dissolve it in the water with the help of a glass rod.

(iii) Observe if there is any change in the water level and make the necessary conclusions.

Observations:

  • The level of water does not change after salt is dissolved.
Dissolution of salt in water does not change the water level.
Salt Dissolves in Water: You will observe the level of water does not change. Let us learn why this happened.

Conclusions: Matter is comprised of particles. When we dissolved salt in water, the particles of sugar got inserted into the spaces between particles of water. Hence, the water level did not change.
