Solution to Activity 1.1 of NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 1 Crop Production and Management:

1. Complete Activity 1.1 (Page 4). Take a beaker and fill half of it with water. Put a handful of wheat seeds and stir well. Wait for some time.

Answer:

The above activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim: To observe what happens when you put a handful of wheat seeds in water and conclude based on the observations.

Materials Required: Beaker, water, wheat seeds.

Procedure:

(i) Fill half the beaker with water.

(ii) Put a handful of wheat seeds in the water and stir well. Wait for some time and observe what happens.

Observations:

You will observe that some seeds float on water.

Floating Seeds: You will notice that after sometime a few seeds float on water. Let us find out why.

Conclusions:

We conclude that

  • The seeds which float are lighter than those which sink.
  • They are lighter because they are damaged and are thus devoid of nutrients and are hollow.
  • This is a good method for separating the healthy seeds from the damaged ones.
