6. Complete Activity 11.6 (Page 129). Take a concave mirror. Hold it facing the Sun. Try to get the light reflected by the mirror on a sheet of paper. Adjust the distance of the paper until you get a sharp bright spot on it. Hold the mirror and the sheet of paper steady for a few minutes. Does the paper start burning? Make the necessary conclusions.
Answer: The activity can be carried out as follows:
Aim: To direct light reflected by a concave mirror on a sheet of paper, watch if it burns and make the necessary conclusions based on that.
Materials Required: Concave mirror, sheet of paper.
Procedure:
(i) Hold the concave mirror in your hand and hold it facing the Sun and have another person stand holding a sheet of paper some distance away.
(ii) Turn the concave mirror until the light reflected by the mirror falls on a sheet of paper.
(iii) Adjust the distance of the paper until you get a sharp bright spot on it.
(iv) Hold the mirror and the sheet of paper steady for a few minutes and observe what happens.
Caution: While carrying out this activity never look directly towards the Sun or its image to prevent any damage to your eyes. You may look at the image of the Sun when it is thrown on a screen or wall.
Observations: A sharp bright spot forms on the paper as shown in the figure below. That area of the paper heats up and starts burning after a while.
Conclusions: The bright spot is the real image of the Sun because it can be cast on a screen. So we conclude that concave mirrors can form real images.
