The above activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim:
To moisten bread, leave it in a moist warm place for 2–3 days and observe what happens.

Materials Required: Piece of bread, water, microscope or a magnifying glass.

Procedure:

Moisten the piece of bread with the water and leave it in a moist warm place for 2-3 days. Observe what happens.

Observations:

You will observe that after 2-3 days white, green or brown fluffy patches appear on bread. When viewed under a microscope many small spherical structures are seen.

Mould on Bread: White, green or brown patches of fungi called mould form. The microscopic view is shown on the top right.

Conclusions: The white, green or brown fluffy patches are mould which are a type of fungi. The small spherical structures seen under the microscope are the fungal spores via which fungi reproduce. Fungal spores germinate in moist conditions.
