Solution to Activity 3.6 of NCERT Class 7 Science Chapter 3 Heat

6. Complete Activity 3.6 (Page 29). Take a rod or flat strip of a metal, say of aluminium or iron. Fix a few small wax pieces on the rod. These pieces should be at nearly equal distances (Fig. 3.7). Clamp the rod to a stand. If you do not find a stand, you can put one end of the rod in between bricks. Now, heat the other end of the rod and observe. What happens to the wax pieces? Do these pieces begin to fall? Which piece falls the first? Do you think that heat is transferred from the end nearest to the flame to the other end?

Answer:
The above activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim:
To observe if and in which order the wax pieces begin to fall and conclude based on the observations.

Materials Required:
Flat iron strip, two bricks, small wax pieces, candle.

Procedure:

(i) Fix the wax pieces at equal distances on the rod.

(ii) Clamp the flat strip between two bricks.

(iii) Now place the candle right below the other end of the metal strip and heat the strip. Observe what happens to the wax pieces.

Observations: The wax pieces fall one by one starting from the end nearest to the flame.

One end of strip held between two bricks and the other end being heated with a candle to make wax pieces fall.
Heat Flows Through Strip: The wax pieces melt and fall one by one indicating that heat flows through the strip. What is this process of heat transfer called?

Conclusions:

The process by which heat is transferred from the hotter end nearest to the candle to the colder end is called conduction. This process of heat transfer takes place in solids.
