Solution to Activity 9.3 of NCERT Class 9 Science Chapter 9 Gravitation

3. Complete Activity 9.3 (Page 103).

• Take a sheet of paper and a stone. Drop them simultaneously from the first floor of a building. Observe whether both of them reach the ground simultaneously.

Answer:

Aim:
To observe whether the sheet of paper and the stone reach the ground simultaneously and conclude based on that.

Materials Required:
Sheet of paper, stone.

Procedure:

(i) Drop the sheet of paper and the stone simultaneously from the first floor of a building and observe whether they reach the ground simultaneously.

Observations:

The stone reaches the ground faster than the sheet of paper.

Two hands dropping a sheet of paper and a stone from a certain height.
Air Resistance: The air resistance to the paper is much higher than air resistance to the stone. hence, the stone reaches the ground faster.

Conclusions:

Although the sheet of paper and the stone both should fall with the same acceleration, that is acceleration due to gravity ‘g’, the air resistance faced by the sheet of paper is more than that of the stone. Hence, the stone falls faster than the sheet of paper.

“• Take a sheet of paper and a stone. Drop them simultaneously from the first floor of a building. Observe whether both of them reach the ground simultaneously.” – Solved.
