Solution to Activity 1.4 of NCERT Class 10 Science Chapter 1 Chemical Reactions and Equations

4. Complete Activity 1.4 (Page 6).

  • Take a small amount of calcium oxide or quick lime in a beaker.
  • Slowly add water to this.
  • Touch the beaker as shown in Fig. 1.3.
  • Do you feel any change in temperature?

Answer:

Aim:
To observe what happens when water is added to calcium oxide in a beaker and make conclusions.

Materials Required:
Calcium oxide,water, beaker.

Procedure:

(i) A small amount of calcium oxide is taken in a beaker.

(ii) Then water is slowly added to the beaker. The observations are noted.

Observations:

The beaker becomes hot.

Conclusions:

  • Calcium oxide reacts vigorously with water to produce slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) releasing a large amount of heat.
  • This indicates the reaction is exothermic.
  • The reaction is a combination reaction and is shown below:
    CaO(s) + H2O(l) —> Ca(OH)2(aq) + Heat
