5. Complete Activity 11.5 (Page 128). Take a stainless steel spoon. Bring the outer side of the spoon near your face and look into it. Do you see your image in it? Is this image different from what you see in a plane mirror? Is this image erect? Is the size of the image the same, smaller or larger? Now look at your image using the inner side of the spoon. Make the necessary conclusions.
Answer: The activity can be carried out as follows:
Aim: To observe your facial image on the outer side of the spoon and then on the inner side of the spoon, compare them with that of a plane mirror and make the necessary conclusions.
Materials Required: Clean new spoon.
Procedure:
(i) Bring the outer side of the stainless steel spoon near your face and look into it. Make a note of the observations.
(ii) Then bring the inner side of the stainless steel spoon near your face and look into it. Make a note of the observations.
Observations:
You will observe:
- The image on the outer side of the spoon is erect like the image formed by a plane mirror but smaller (diminished) in size unlike the image of a plane mirror.
- The image on the inner side of the spoon is inverted unlike the image formed by a plane mirror and smaller (diminished) in size unlike the image of a plane mirror.
Conclusions:
- The outer surface of the spoon acts as a convex mirror and forms an erect but smaller (diminished) in size image.
- The inner surface of the spoon acts as a concave mirror and in this case forms an inverted and smaller (diminished) in size image.
