Solution to Activity 1.8 of NCERT Class 10 Science Chapter 1 Chemical Reactions and Equations

8. Complete Activity 1.8 (Page 9).

  • Take about 2 g silver chloride in a china dish.
  • What is its colour?
  • Place this china dish in sunlight for some time (Fig. 1.7).
  • Observe the colour of the silver chloride after some time.

Answer:

Aim:
To observe what happens tosilver chloride in the presence of sunlight and make conclusions.

Materials Required:
2 g silver chloride, china dish, open window.

Procedure:

(i) The 2 g of silver chloride is put in a china dish.

(ii) The china dish is placed near a window through which sunlight is entering. The observations after sometime are noted.

Observations:

White silver chloride turns grey on exposure to sunlight.

Conclusions:
Silver chloride decomposes by the action of sunlight into silver and chlorine. The reaction is shown below:
2AgCl(s) + Sunlight —> 2Ag(s) + Cl2(g)
