6. Complete Activity 10.6 (Page 117). Take around 75 cm long piece of insulated flexible wire and an iron nail, say about 6 – 10 cm long. Wind the wire tightly around the nail in the form of a coil. Connect the free ends of the wire to the terminals of a cell through a switch. Place some pins on or near the end of the nail. Now switch on the current. What happens? Do the pins cling to the tip of the nail? Switch off the current. Are the pins still clinging to the end of the nail?
Answer: Activity 10.6 can be carried out as follows:
Aim: To examine if electric current can make a wire attract pins towards it and make the necessary conclusions based on that.
Materials Required: 75 cm long piece of insulated flexible wire, 6 – 10 cm long iron nail, electric cell, switch, pins.
Procedure:
(i) Wind the 75 cm long piece of insulated flexible wire around the iron nail tightly in the form of a coil.
(ii) Connect the free ends of the wire to the terminals of a cell through a switch.
(iii) Place some pins on or near the end of the nail and also near the body. Switch on the current and observe what happens.
(iv) Now switch off the current and observe what happens.
(v) Based on the observations in (iii) and (iv), make the necessary conclusions.

Observations:
- When the current is switched on the pins stick to the nail as shown in Figure (b).
- When the current is switched off as shown in Figure (a) the pins are not attracted to the nail.
Conclusions: When electric current flows through the coil, the coil behaves like a magnet and attracts magnetic substances. This is known as the magnetic effect of electric current.
