1. Complete Activity 3.1 (Page 37).

  • Take samples of iron, copper, aluminium and magnesium. Note the appearance of each sample.
  • Clean the surface of each sample by rubbing them with sand paper and note their appearance again.

Answer:

Aim:
To note the appearance of samples of iron, copper, aluminium and magnesium, clean the surface of eachby rubbing with sandpaper and note the appearance again and conclude.

Materials Required:
Samples of iron, copper, aluminium and magnesium, sandpaper.

Procedure:

(i) Study the appearance of iron, copper, aluminium and magnesium.

(ii) Rub the metals with sandpaper and study the appearance again. Make a note of the observations.

Observations:

(i) Initially the metals appear shiny.

(ii) On rubbing with sandpaper the metals appear shinier.

Conclusions:

Metals, in their pure state, have a shiny surface. This property is called metallic lustre.
