2. Complete Activity 3.2 (Page 37).

  • Take small pieces of iron, copper, aluminium, and magnesium. Try to cut these metals with a sharp knife and note your observations.
  • Hold a piece of sodium metal with a pair of tongs. CAUTION: Always handle sodium metal with care. Dry it by pressing between the folds of a filter paper.
  • Put it on a watch-glass and try to cut it with a knife.
  • What do you observe?


Answer:

Aim:
To try to cut small pieces of iron, copper, aluminium, magnesium and sodium and make the necessary conclusions.

Materials Required:
Iron, copper, aluminium, magnesium, sodium, knife, tongs, filter paper, watch-glass.

Procedure:

(i) Try to cut the small pieces of iron, copper, aluminium and magnesium with the knife and note the observations.

(ii) Grasp the piece of sodium gently with the tongs and use the filter paper to dry it. Caution: Handle the sodium metal with care.

(iii) Next place the sodium on the watch glass and try to cut it using the knife. Note the observations.

Observations:

  • It is not possible to cut iron, copper, aluminium, magnesium.
  • It is possible to cut sodium metal easily.

Conclusions:

In general metals are hard. This property of metals is called hardness.
