Solution to Activity 3.5 of NCERT Class 7 Science Chapter 3 Heat

5. Complete Activity 3.5 (Page 28). Take some hot water in a beaker or a mug. Dip the thermometer in water. Wait till the mercury thread becomes steady and note the temperature. Now take out the thermometer from water. Observe carefully what happens now.

Answer: The above activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim:
To take out the laboratory thermometer from the water, observe what happens and make the necessary conclusions.

Materials Required:
Laboratory thermometer, hot water, beaker.

Procedure:

(i) Fill the beaker with hot water.

(ii) Carefully dip the thermometer in the hot water such that it does not touch the beaker and hold it vertically.

(iii) Now take out the thermometer out of the water and observe what happens.

Observations: When you take the thermometer out of the water, the level of mercury begins to fall.

Hand holding thermometer in water and hand holding thermometer out of water.
Which One is Correct: The level of mercury falls when you take the thermometer out of the water. So can you tell which method gives us the correct reading?

Conclusions:

Since the mercury falls as soon as the thermometer is taken out of the water, we will get inaccurate readings. Therefore, the temperature must be read while the thermometer is in water.
