Solution to Extended Learning – Activities and Projects Question 4 of NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 4 Combustion and Flame

4. Talk to people who use LPG at home. Find out what precautions they take in using LPG.

Answer:

After speaking to people who use LPG at home, I found that they take the following precautions while using LPG:

Safe Storage: LPG cylinders are stored in an upright position in cool, dry places away from direct sunlight. This is done to prevent the temperature in the cylinder from rising.

Ventilation: Many stressed on the importance of opening windows and exhaust fans to maintain good ventilation during usage of LPG appliances such as stove. This is to prevent accumulation of LPG.

Maintenance: Appliances using LPG should be regularly maintained to prevent any issues. This reduces the risk of gas leaks and other kinds of malfunctioning. Respondents reported that they cleaned carbon deposits from the burners regularly.  Also, the LPG cylinders are to be handled with care.

Safe Ignition: Respondents reported using long matchsticks or lighters for safe ignition. Also, the lighter should not be held too close to the burner to prevent the gas from igniting inside the burner which could be problematic. Lastly, I learnt that the gas should not be turned on too high before lighting for safety reasons.

Other Best Practices: Users reported that they do not leave the stove unattended while it is on. Also, they users took care to turn off the gas supply when not in use.
