Septic Tank: Septic tanks were placed behind every house inside which the sewage produced by the household used to accumulate. The sewage decomposed inside the tank and was manually removed. An image of on such septic tank is shown below:

Manual Scavenging: In this arrangement human waste used to gather inside a container underneath the toilet and was removed by a scavenger. This makeshift arrangement has since been banned due to its detrimental effects on health.
