Undergraduate Education – Words of Wisdom

Hello folks! So you’ve reached that stage in your life when you’re going to start college. In this post, I will list some general points on how to be successful in your undergraduate careers:

  • Firstly, let me point out that the new found freedom youngsters get after making the transition from high school to college/university can affect them in a negative way. College is not all about bunking class and having fun. Its mostly about kick starting your career. This is where a lot of young people get it wrong, which can be disastrous. For example, when you’re applying for jobs or if you’re appearing for b-school interviews (more on this later), your undergraduate record will play an important role in securing that plum job or getting into your dream b-school. So, develop good study habits and make friends with the right people.
  • Secondly, if you’re planning to go for postgraduate studies, plan early. Educate yourself about the options that are available to you and chalk out a plan. In fact, I am also in favour of having multiple back-up plans. Once again, plan as early as you can.
  • Thirdly, if you’re planning appearing for competitive exams such as the CAT, through which is required for admission to top b-schools; GATE, which lead to jobs in PSUs; or the Civil Services Exam, don’t wait till your graduation year. Start your preparation (more regarding this later), as early as possible. Remember, starting early gives you more time to study and practice as well as gives you a lot of confidence.
  • I hope this helps. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or if you want me to write on a specific topic, please do not hesitate to let me know. Either way, I have plenty more useful info to share with you, so stay tuned!
