1. Using the knowledge of acids and bases. Write a secret message with the help of baking soda and beet root. Explain how it works. (Hint: Prepare baking soda solution in water. Use this solution to write the message on a sheet of white paper with a cotton bud. Rub a slice of fresh beet root over the message.)

Answer:

The experiment is described below:

Aim: To write a secret message with the help of baking soda and beet root and make conclusions based on what you observe.

Materials Required: Baking soda, beetroot, water, white paper.

Procedure:

(i) Prepare a baking soda solution by dissolving baking soda in water.

Preparing a solution of baking soda by dissolving in water.
Baking Soda Solution: Prepare a solution of baking soda in water as shown above.

(ii) Dip a cotton bud in the baking soda solution and write a message of your choice on a sheet of white paper.

(iii) Rub a fresh beet root over the message.

Observation:

The message will appear in yellow on a sheet of paper.

Secret message which says "Boojho and Paheli are friends' revealed on rubbing with beetroot.
Secret Message: When you rub beetroot over the message, the writing appears in yellow. Can we say that beetroot is an indicator?

Conclusion:

The beetroot is actually an indicator which changed colour to yellow on contact with the basic baking soda solution.
