4. Project Work

Visit a farm, nursery or a garden nearby. Gather information about

(i) importance of seed selection.

(ii) method of irrigation

(iii) effect of extreme cold and extreme hot weather on the plants.

(iv) effect of continuous rain on the plants.

(v) fertilisers/manure used.

Answers:

From my visit to a nursery growing floral crops, I learnt the following:

(i) importance of seed selection.

It is important to select good-quality seeds to ensure high yield, disease resistance and adaptability to local conditions. The exact variety of seeds depends on the goals of the cultivation.

(ii) method of irrigation

The different methods of irrigation are drip irrigation, sprinkler systems, furrow irrigation, or flood irrigation. In the nursery I visited, drip irrigation and sprinkler systems were used to avoid wastage of water.

(iii) effect of extreme cold and extreme hot weather on the plants.

Extreme cold temperatures can cause ice to form inside plant cells, causing cell damage. If the temperature falls below the specific temperature range in which the plants thrive, growth of the plant can be hampered.

In case of extreme hot temperatures, evaporation increases and can cause dehydration and wilting. Excessive heat can also damage plant tissues.

(iv) effect of continuous rain on the plants.

Continuous rain can cause waterlogging, which prevents oxygen from entering into the soil. Due to oxygen deprivation the roots may become unhealthy and start rotting. Excess moisture also enables fungi to grow, which infects crops and affects their health.

(v) fertilisers/manure used.

Fertilizers rich in nutrients promote better yield of crops. Excessive use of fertilisers cause crop damage, water pollution and can also be poisonous to humans and animals. Therefore, in the nursery rotten cow-dung manure was used.

A picture of the nursery I visited is shown below:
