5. Visit a nearby hospital. You can also visit the clinic of an ENT specialist, or a dentist. Request the doctor to show you the mirrors used for examining ear, nose, throat and teeth. Can you recognise the kind of mirror used in these instruments?

Answer: The activity can be carried out as follows:

Aim: To examine kinds of mirrors used by a dentist and an ENT specialist and identify the type of mirror used in these instruments.

Materials Required: You are required to visit an ENT specialist or a dental clinic.

Procedure:

(i) Visit a nearby hospital or a dentist’s clinic and the chamber of an ENT specialist.

(ii) Request the dentist to show you the mirrors used for examining teeth and ask the ENT specialist to show you what types of mirrors he uses for examining ear, nose, throat. Ask them how they are used clinically.

Observations: You will learn that the mirrors used clinically by both the dentist and the ENT all appear concave in nature. The mirror a dentist generally uses is shown below:

Dentist’s Mirror: Dentists use concave mirrors to see magnified images of the teeth. Next time you visit a dentist, ask him how he uses them!

The mirrors an ENT specialist generally uses are shown below:

Mirrors used by ENT specialists.

Conclusions: Concave mirrors are used clinically to check for and diagnose medical conditions because of its ability to form enlarged and magnified images.
